The Visconti Hours edited by Millard Meiss & Edith Kirsch |
| The manuscript
deserves a number of adjectives: fanciful, splendid, innovative and even
gaudy. The borders are brilliant and no two are alike. Some
are not so different from previous borders in illuminated manuscripts
(just bigger) while others combine a multitude of new shapes and large
objects. His work resembles jewelry and enamels, not the least
because of his lavish use of gold. To see a couple details, click here.
The facsimile is very well done as well. Like all the older Braziller facsimiles, the paper is heavy and looks like parchment. The gold is printed as a separate color, so that instead of that unsatisfactory orange look found in cheaper reproductions, it really glows. There are 128 color plates plus commentary that explains the scenes and evaluates the artwork. For all this quality, the price is very reasonable. $65.00 (hardcover) |
