The
Tres Riches Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry
Introduction and Legends by Jean Longnon and Raymond Cazelles |
| It could easily
be argued that the Tres Riches Heures is the pinnacle of
manuscript illumination. This Braziller facsimile definitely does
it justice. All the illuminations and a selection of the decorated
pages are included, reproduced at their original size. The colors
are beautiful. It was printed as four colors plus gold, so the
gold stands and really glows, unlike cheaper printing methods that often
leave it a dirty yellow-green. The pages are a heavy,
parchment-looking paper and the book is boxed. Those who are only familiar
with the calendar pages will probably be surprised at the number and
variety of illuminations. In fact, there is a whole section
completed a number of years later by a different illuminator, as the
Limbourg brothers had not completed it when the Duke died in
1416. This may seem expensive, but it is a treasure that is
worth it.
