| Despite
its popular appearance, this book is really a serious study of the
tournament. There are at least two other books on the market with
the same name, but they are padding out some information on tourneys
with a general information on knights in the middle ages. This
book starts with the origins of the tournament and then examines its
form in different countries. There is a chapter on the later
tourneys - spectacles, pas d'armes and challenges. The dangers of
tournaments, the special armour used, and the function of the
tournaments as an event are all discussed. There are lots of
illustrations from period manuscripts, many large and in color
(including many pictures that show horse barding).
