| The
Sister Fidelma mysteries seem to be getting better as the series
progresses. The first couple novels not only lacked the Irish
setting, but seemed to drag on much longer than necessary. This
one is no shorter, but much more of interest is happening.
As it opens, Sister Fidelma is presiding over a local court, hearing a dispute over land ownership. The intricacies of Brehon Law are well displayed and interesting. Naturally, there is soon a murder discovered in a neighboring town and she is sent to investigate. Any experienced mystery reader can see that the accused deaf-mute is innocent, but determining who is guilty leads through many tangles and comes as at least a partial surprise at the end. $5.99 (paperback) |
