Shoes and Pattens

by Francis Grew and Margrethe de Neergaard

Until recently, very little was known about medieval footwear except what could be gleaned from paintings.  However, in the last 40 years, over 2,000 shoes have been uncovered in the archeological digging along the Thames.  The wealth of different styles is surprising, with boots and short slippers, drawstring closures and toggles and patterns in cutwork and stamping.
This, of course, is the latest of the re-issues of the Museum of the City of London books.  Naturally, this will be of interest to people who are serious about costume.  It should also interest leatherworkers, even if they don't make shoes, as many techniques of leather decoration are documented.
