Scribes and Illuminators  by Christopher De Hamel

This is part of a marvelous series on medieval craftsmen published by the University of Toronto Press.  Actually, the author covers all the trades that were involved in the production of a manuscript: The first chapter is paper and parchment makers, the next is ink makers and scribes and the last chapter is illuminators, binders and booksellers.
The book is short, but packed with interesting and useful information.  The author, Christopher De Hamel, is a recognized authority in the field of illuminated manuscripts.  There are a great many pictures, color and black & white, most of which are not commonly reproduced.
