Netherlandish Art  1400-1600 by H.van Os, J. Kok, G. Luijten, & F. Scholten

When you think of the Rijkmuseum in Amsterdam, you probably think of Rembrandt, Frans Hal and Vermeer, the important Dutch genre painters of the mid-1600's.  As this book clearly shows, that museum has a very impressive collection of art of an earlier date as well.  There are not only paintings, but furniture, glassware, engravings, and sculpture.  There is an especially large number of of examples of woodcarving.
Students of costume and everyday life of that time and place will find a great deal to interest them, both in the artifacts and in the detailed and realistic paintings.  And no one with a sense of humor should miss the engraving of the Virgin Mary holding her naked breast and squirting St. Bernard in the eye with a stream of milk.
