Medieval Warfare in Manuscripts       by Pamela Porter
The British Library is coming out with a new series that promises to be of great value - The Medieval World in Manuscripts.  This is one of the first volumes.  It is small (only 65 pages) but full of color pictures taken from illuminated manuscripts that illustrate armour, battles, sieges, tourneys and the use of canon.  Not surprisingly, most of the pictures are from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, although there are a few that are earlier.
Many of the pictures are nicely enlarged so that the details can be seen.  Unfortunately, with the small size of the book and all the space devoted to illustrations, there is not much room for text.  As far as it goes, it seems clear and accurate, but many will find it rather elementary.  Buy this book for the pictures.
