| The
Medieval Tailor's Assistant: Making
Common Garments 1200-1500
by Sarah Thursfield |

| Despite
the number of titles in the Costume section, there is a sad lack of
recent books on medieval costume, especially considering the
demand. Dover has been re-printing some titles, but the best of
these (the Norris books) date from the 1930s. Thursfield's new
book is not the perfect costume text, but it is a definite improvement
on most of the non-scholarly books out there.
This is a practical guide to the cut and construction of common garments. The clothes are presented in layers: underwear, main garments and outerwear. Her main goal is to prepare working patterns that recreate the look of the period rather than aim for exact historical accuracy, although she is not indifferent to it. This is not new research and will probably be too elementary for the serious costumer. All the rest of us will find it a valuable addition to our libraries. $39.95 (paperback) |
