The
Medieval Book
by Barbara Shailor |
| Historians
will look at a medieval book in terms of what can be learned from the
text. Artists will look at the beauty of the calligraphy and
illumination. Shailor's study examines the physical format of the
medieval book and shows how the contents influenced its physical appearance
and the way it was produced. The Medieval Book is well
illustrated, with many black & white pictures and some color plates,
using items from Yale's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript
Library. As many of these manuscripts are not well known,
the plates are valuable for that reason alone. There are several fascinating
pictures of the leather bindings and information on how books were
bound.
