| Recently
reprinted, after being out-of-print for some time, this is an obscure
but valuable work for those researching medieval and renaissance
painting methods. The author has translated a number (book is 918
pages) of period manuscripts on the subject, which are printed with the
original language version on the facing page. Most are
"recipe books" detailing the artists' methods of making paint
and preparing surfaces. Although the primary emphasis is on oil
painting, mosaics, gilding, glazing, painting on glass, manuscript
illumination and cutting gems are all included. Also included is
an "Introduction" of almost 300 pages in which she discusses
the materials referred to in the texts.
