This
is not a costume book, although I've listed it under that, as well as
art - renaissance. However, anyone interested in German
Renaissance dress will find the paintings of Lucas Cranach one of their
most interesting sources of information. He painted LOTS of
pictures of women, some of them portraits, but more of them idealized,
even somewhat fantastical, women of myth or religious legend.
These women tend to look very much alike, except for their clothes,
which are portrayed in great detail. This volume has color plates
of most, if not all, of his work. The reproductions are large
enough that the details can be easily seen (the book is slightly bigger
than the scanner bed.) The text chronicles Cranach's life and
analyses the growth of his painting style.
