| Despite looking
like a thin picture book, this is a book for somewhat older
children. Adults would probably enjoy it too, especially if they
are just beginning their study of the Middle Ages. The main thread
of the book is the story of William Marshal, but the author uses that to
educate on knightly culture in general. There are pages of general
information scattered throughout the story to elaborate on such things
as the construction of chain mail or the Knights Templar. Of
course, William Marshal's life is the epitome of chivalric success and
has plenty of excitement to keep even TV-sated children turning the
pages. The pictures are a combination of illuminations, photos of
artifacts and modern art commissioned to tell specific parts of the
story.
