Illuminated Manuscripts

by Janice Anderson

One common feature of bargain books is that they tend to have lots of color pictures.  For a book on illumination, this is a real plus.  The reproductions are, for the most part, quite good size (the book itself is slightly larger than the scanner bed).  Quite a few of the pages shown are not commonly reproduced and there is not the usual bias toward the more "realistic" style of the later Middle Ages, but rather a goodly number of pieces from the 11th and 12th centuries are included.
There are some flaws, however.  While much of the color reproduction is fine, on some of the plates, it is way off.  Although the text follows a historical sequence, a number of the pictures are placed far from their chronological spot.  While the text seems accurate enough (on a quick overview), the author is more knowledgeable about general medieval history than about art.  As a first introduction to manuscript illumination, I wouldn't recommend it.  However, as an addition to library of other art books, it's more than worth the price.
