| The
Hound and the Hawk: The
Art of Medieval Hunting
by John Cummins |
![]() |
| For
the medieval gentleman, hunting was one of the major occupations of his
life; yet it is a subject mostly ignored today. Cummins tries to
make up for this lack by tackling everything at once - the animals
hunted, the job of the huntsman, hunting music, the lore of falconry and
the hunting methods of the common man. There are some short
appendices that offer translations of a few primary source documents and
numerous excerpts from other period works are scattered throughout the
text. Hunting motifs and symbolisms run throughout medieval art
and literature and these are discussed also. About 50
illustrations from manuscripts and tapestries are included
(unfortunately only reproduced in black and white)
