Glass of the Sultans

By Stefano Carboni and David Whitehouse

It is rather amazing that such a fragile thing as glass could survive intact and with many examples from as long ago as the 8th century.  In this book are presented, in large and lovely color plates, 157 selections of high-quality Islamic glass, most dating from the medieval period.  This is the catalog of a very impressive museum exhibit put together by The Corning Museum of Glass and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  A wide variety of objects are pictured, including perfume flasks, mosque lamps, candlesticks, drinking horns and inkwells.  There are simple, undecorated free-blown objects, mold-blown pieces hot-worked medallions and mosaic bowls.  Although this is not a cheap book, it is well worth the price.
