| The Farnese Hours by Webster Smith |
|
| This is one of
the manuscript facsimiles published by Braziller, and, like all the
rest, it is beautifully done. The manuscript dates from 1546, so
some of the pages are very ornate, almost Baroque, and not to everyone's
taste. The pages that contain text and limit the illumination to
the sides and bottom are simpler and softer and have some charming
details. In its time, it was felt that the artist, Clovio,
"had carried the art of illumination to unprecedented heights, just
as Michelangelo himself had done in ...sculpture...".
The volume is small, about 41/2" by 7", and under the dust
jacket, is a tan binding with an engraved suede-type finish, based on
the original binding.
