| Chaucer and Costume by Laura F. Hodges | |||
|
This is a very serious book - on some
pages, there is more footnotes than text. Although she has
looked at brasses and manuscripts, most of her material comes from
written sources. There is a tremendous amount of detail,
although her primary focus is probably illuminating Chaucer rather
than researching costume. Despite the hefty price tag, there are
only a few color plates stuck in the middle. The high cost is
because that's typical for Boydell & Brewer, a British firm that
does some great titles but charges a fortune if it's obscure and
scholarly. They tell me that if it sells well enough, they might
bring it out in paperback in a few years. Still, if you
can afford it without too much strain, it will be worth getting if
this is your area of specialization.
