| The Celts edited by Venceslas Kruta et al. |
|
|
I've carried several books entitled The Celts (I wish authors
would show a little more creativity in these titles), but this one is
probably the best. It was originally published in Italy, as a
companion volume to an exhibit at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice. It
contains a great number of focused articles on different facets of
Celtic life from the 6th century BCE to the medieval period. A few
of these articles include: 'Language and Writing of the Early Celts',
'The Princely Tombs of the Celts in the Middle Rhineland', 'The Celtic
Population of Bohemia in the Fourth Century B.C.','Mercenary Activity',
'The Romanization of Gaul', 'Hillforts', and 'Music Archaeology and the
Ancient Celts'. There are lots of pictures of artifacts, with the more
spectacular finds shown in color. It's a good size (700 pages)
book with substantial scholarship that's well worth the price.
