The Bible Moralisee is one of the
2 oldest surviving examples of a "moralized bible". These
are essentially picture books. Although they contain written
text (both biblical text and commentary), the words are secondary to
the pictures; they act as captions, clarifying and amplifying the
images. The images are in roundels and each page has 2 columns
of 4 roundels, with the text next to it. This gives us a very
large range of different scenes. It also means the images are
rather small. The original manuscript measures 344 X 260 mm.
The facsimile has reduced this to 195 X 145 mm. (European
publisher - I'll let you figure out what this translates to in inches)
In the back, there is a translation of the text that accompanies the
miniatures.
The only thing I dislike about this book
is the size of the miniatures - I have trouble seeing what is going
on. (Being at the bifocal age may have something to do with
this.) I do find that matters are greatly improved with the use
of a good magnifying glass.
